About Us

Michigan Magnetics, Inc. (MMI) was organized in 1954 and was originally known as Vermontville Magnetics.  It was later incorporated and its name was changed to Michigan Magnetics, Inc. and remained as such until 1962.  That year, VSI Corp. of Pasadena, California purchased the company and reorganized it as a subsidiary.  In 1966, it became a division of VSI and in 1970, this division was sold to Computer Electronics of Indianapolis, Indiana.  In 1971, Computer Electronics closed its doors and the assets of MMI were sold to Mr. John French, who owned the company until 1998.  That year, the present owner acquired the company.

Magnetic Head Technologies (Bulgaria) AD (MHTB) was founded in 1972.  Prior to 1986, the plant formed part of the ISOT State Association and thereafter underwent a number of changes until 1991.  The Magnitni Glavi plant, as it was then known, was transferred into a State owned limited liability company.  Prior to the collapse of the communist countries, the plant had an absolute monopoly in the production of disc drive and magnetic heads for the communist bloc countries.

In February 2000, Michigan Magnetics, Inc. acquired 100% of the capital stock of DRS Ahead Technology, who, in turn owned 97% of the capital shares of the Bulgarian magnetic head manufacturing company then known as DRS Ahead Technology (Bulgaria) AD.  Upon the acquisition by MMI, the name was changed to Magnetic Head Technologies (Bulgaria) AD (MHTB).  This company has since become a 99.7% indirectly owned subsidiary of MMI.

In 2010, MMI moved its headquarters to Cincinnati, Ohio and changed its name to Global Manufacturing Industries (GMI) to better reflect the long term goal of the company to broaden its contract manufacturing sector.

Today, MHTB is a Bulgarian corporation that is 99.7% indirectly owned by GMI.  The remaining 0.3% is owned by the employees who were granted this interest as part of the 1997 privatization arrangement of the company.

Over the years, MHTB has acquired a total vertical production structure and is today capable of manufacturing the entire process.  These capabilities include a mechanical treatment shop, a thermal treatment and etching shop, an air conditioned assembly area, chemical, measuring, and testing laboratories, a fully equipped tool room, and its major asset – an experience and skilled labor force.

Our Design and Development Department serves a two-fold purpose:  (1) to originate functional head designs that meet a specified need; and (2) to provide data on materials, processes, and standards of performance testing that will facilitate the cost efficient head production.  In many cases, an existing head model or modification to an existing head is the most effective answer.  Some conditions demand that a unique head be developed and an exacting production schedule be invoked.  This is always achieved through close cooperation with the customers’ design engineers.  After preliminary designs are accomplished, functional prototypes are built.  This enables us to ascertain production feasibility and the customer to determine the new heads functional potential.
